Taiwanese citizens need a UK ETA to visit Britain in 2026, provided their passport shows a personal ID number — the £20 authorisation is bought online and linked to that passport. Taiwan is a non-visa nationality for short UK stays, so the ETA replaced the old on-arrival check. Here is who qualifies, the cost, the application from Taiwan, and what the border looks like now.

TL;DR: A UK ETA for Taiwanese citizens is required for visits of up to six months. Your Taiwan passport must include a national ID number. The ETA costs £20, lasts two years or until the passport expires, and permits unlimited trips. Approval is often instant; leave three working days to be safe.

Key facts at a glance:

Taiwan passport holders qualify for the ETA only if the passport contains a personal ID number (gov.uk/eta).

The fee moved to £20 on 8 April 2026, having been £16 before.

A single approval covers unlimited entries across two years, each stay lasting no more than six months.

Every person travelling needs their own ETA — there is no group application.

Applications go through the official UK ETA app or website, well before departure.

Want to confirm your route first? Start with the UK entry requirements checklist, then run your details through the gov.uk visa checker.

Do Taiwanese citizens need a UK ETA?

Yes, with one condition: a UK ETA for Taiwanese citizens applies to anyone whose Taiwan passport carries a personal ID number, which covers the vast majority of ordinary passports. That ID number is what grants Taiwan its visa-free access to the UK. Without it, a passport does not qualify for the ETA and a visa would be needed instead.

The authorisation suits holidays, family visits and short business trips of up to six months. Longer study, employment or settlement fall outside it and require a visa. Travelling on two passports? See which passport to use if you hold two first.

How much does a UK ETA cost for Taiwanese travellers?

Each Taiwanese traveller pays £20 for the ETA — roughly TWD 830 in mid-2026 — and that single fee unlocks two years of trips. The charge rose from £16 to £20 on 8 April 2026, so treat any lower figure as outdated. Families pay per person, with no bulk rate: two adults and two children come to £80.

Dig into the numbers with the £20 UK ETA fee, a full cost breakdown and accepted payment methods.

How to apply for a UK ETA from Taiwan

From Taiwan, the application takes around 15 minutes on the official app or website, using your ID-numbered passport and a card to pay. You enter passport details, add a photo, and answer short background questions. Decisions often arrive within the hour, yet the Home Office suggests planning for up to three working days.

Work through it like this:

Confirm the passport. It must be biometric and carry a personal ID number. Not sure it is still valid? Check your passport is valid.

Have your basics ready. A card, an email address, and the items in documents you need to apply.

Submit the form. Add your details, upload the photo, answer the questions and pay the £20.

Follow the outcome. Use check your ETA application status; approval attaches to the passport by itself.

Rather hand the form to someone else? We can look over your answers and file the application for you — often asked for by families arranging a trip for elderly parents in Taichung or Kaohsiung who would sooner avoid the online steps. The itinerary stays yours; we simply stop the small slips that cause hold-ups.

What Taiwanese passport holders should know at the UK border

With an approved ETA, Taiwanese citizens clear the UK border at an ePassport gate or a Border Force desk, and the permission is verified digitally with no card to fill in. Anyone aged 8 or over can use the eGates found at the main airports. A scan of the chip and a face match confirm your ETA within moments.

Keep your onward ticket and accommodation details to hand. Extra questions are uncommon, though a brief chat about why you are visiting can happen on a first arrival. The gov.uk travel advice for Taiwan and the British Office Taipei pages are handy references before departure.

Pro tip: Sort the ETA before buying flights. Most approvals come through fast, but a manual review can run to three working days — waiting on those tickets until you are cleared removes the only genuine risk.

Picture a Taipei family flying to London during the Lunar New Year break. Each of the four applies a fortnight ahead, pays £20, and is approved the same afternoon. Landing at Heathrow, they go straight to the eGates, tap their passports, and are through in a minute — the ETA quietly handled the paperwork weeks earlier.

Practical tips for Taiwanese travellers heading to the UK

Three simple moves head off almost every issue: apply ahead of time, use only the official channel, and make sure each traveller has an ETA of their own. None of this changes by destination — London, Manchester and Edinburgh follow identical rules.

A final tip smooths a first visit: keep a screenshot of the approval email. Because the ETA is digital and bound to your passport, you almost never need to show it — but having it ready settles any question at the check-in desk in seconds.

Mind the timing. Even with quick approvals, when to apply for your ETA shows why a buffer helps.

Passport due for renewal? The ETA ties to your current one, so a new passport means a fresh application — see renewing your ETA.

Children in the group? Each needs their own: ETAs for babies and children.

Exploring beyond England? One ETA covers the country — try visiting Scotland with an ETA and travelling to Wales.

Had a refusal? What to do if your ETA is refused sets out your options.

We are an independent assistance service, not a government body. You can apply directly on gov.uk (£20), or use our checking and support service.

Prefer expert eyes on it before paying? Our team checks and submits the ETA so nothing gets overlooked — a relief when you are booking on behalf of relatives who would rather not tackle the form.

Frequently asked questions: UK ETA for Taiwanese citizens

Do Taiwanese citizens need a UK ETA in 2026?

Yes, if the Taiwan passport contains a personal ID number. A UK ETA for Taiwanese citizens then covers stays of up to six months and links to that passport.

What if my Taiwan passport has no ID number?

Then it does not qualify for visa-free travel or the ETA, and you would need a UK visa instead. Check your eligibility with the gov.uk visa checker before booking.

How much is the UK ETA for Taiwanese passport holders?

The fee is £20 per person for two years. It rose from £16 on 8 April 2026, and every traveller pays the same amount (gov.uk/eta).

Can Taiwanese travellers work in the UK on an ETA?

No. The ETA is for tourism, family visits and short business trips. Employment or long courses require a visa, which the gov.uk visa checker will identify.

How quickly is the UK ETA approved for Taiwanese applicants?

Approvals often land within the hour. Even so, allow up to three working days, as some applications are held for extra checks.

Do Taiwanese children need their own ETA?

Yes. Each child, including infants, needs an individual ETA, applied for by a parent using the child’s passport.

Is the UK ETA a visa for Taiwanese citizens?

No. It is a travel authorisation, not a visa. Taiwanese passport holders with an ID number use it precisely because they already have visa-free access for short stays.

What happens without an ETA at the airport?

The airline can deny boarding under the “no permission, no travel” policy. Apply before you head to the airport, not on the day of the flight.

Do Mexican citizens need a UK ETA?

Yes. A UK ETA for Mexican citizens is compulsory for short trips, because Mexico is a non-visa country whose passport holders enter Britain without a full visa. Before the scheme launched, Mexicans arrived and were checked at the desk. That check now happens online, in advance, and stays linked to your passport chip.

The ETA covers holidays, visiting family, and short business meetings for up to six months. It does not cover paid work or long courses — those need a proper visa. Hold two passports? Read which passport to use if you hold two before you apply.

Transit matters too. A Mexican traveller connecting through Heathrow to a third country usually still needs an ETA if they pass through UK border control, so check UK ETA transit rules before booking a layover. Getting this wrong at the last minute is one of the most common reasons flights are missed.

How much does a UK ETA cost for Mexican travellers?

The UK ETA costs £20 for each Mexican traveller, a single charge covering two years of trips — roughly MXN 460 at mid-2026 rates. The price went up from £16 to £20 on 8 April 2026, so ignore older figures. There is no family discount: two parents and two children pay £80 in total.

For the full detail, see the £20 UK ETA fee, a full cost breakdown and accepted payment methods.
How to apply for a UK ETA from Mexico

Apply online or in the official UK ETA app in about 15 minutes, using your biometric Mexican passport and a payment card. The form asks for passport details, a photo, and short background questions. Most people from Mexico get an email decision within minutes; the Home Office still recommends allowing three working days.

Here is the process step by step:

Check your passport. It must be a biometric Mexican passport valid for the trip — check your passport is valid first.

Get ready. Have a payment card, an email address, and the items in documents you need to apply.

Fill in the form. Enter your details, upload a photo, answer the questions and pay £20.

Wait for approval. Track it via check your ETA application status; it links to your passport automatically.

Would you rather not deal with the form? We can check your answers and submit the application for you — a frequent request from families booking for grandparents in Guadalajara or Monterrey who prefer not to apply online. You stay in charge of the plans; we catch the small mistakes that slow things down.

What Mexican passport holders should know at the UK border

At the border, Mexican citizens with an approved ETA use an ePassport gate or a Border Force desk, with the authorisation checked digitally and no paper form to complete. Travellers aged 8 or over can use the eGates at major airports. The gate scans your chip, matches your face, and confirms the ETA in seconds.

Carry proof of your return flight and where you are staying. Officers seldom press Mexican visitors for more, but a brief question about the purpose of your visit is normal, especially on a first trip. Before you fly, the gov.uk travel advice for Mexico is worth a quick read.

Pro tip: Book your ETA before your flights. Approval is usually instant, but a manual check can take up to three working days — and holding off on non-refundable tickets until you are approved removes the only real risk.

Take a Mexico City family flying to London for the October half-term. Each of the four applies a few weeks ahead, pays £20, and is approved within the hour. At Heathrow they head straight to the eGates, tap their passports, and walk through with no form at all — the ETA handled everything in advance.

Practical tips for Mexican travellers heading to the UK

Apply early, stick to the official service, and give every family member their own ETA — those three steps prevent nearly every problem Mexican travellers run into. The rules do not change whether you land in London, Manchester or Edinburgh.

One extra habit helps on a first trip: save a screenshot of your approval email. The ETA is digital and tied to your passport, so you rarely show anything on arrival — but having the confirmation ready answers any check-in question in seconds.

Time it well. Approval is quick, yet when to apply for your ETA explains why leaving a buffer matters.

New passport soon? The ETA is linked to your current one, so a renewal means reapplying — start with renewing your ETA.

Travelling with kids? Each child needs one: ETAs for babies and children.

Heading north? The same ETA works everywhere — see visiting Scotland with an ETA and travelling to Wales.

Want a second opinion before you pay? Our team reviews and submits your ETA so nothing slips through — useful when you are arranging travel for older relatives who would rather skip the online form.

Frequently asked questions: UK ETA for Mexican citizens

Do Mexican citizens need a UK ETA in 2026?

Yes. A UK ETA for Mexican citizens is required before boarding for stays of up to six months. It swaps the old border wave-through for an online permission linked to your passport.

How much is the UK ETA for Mexican passport holders?

It costs £20 per person and lasts two years. The fee rose from £16 on 8 April 2026, and there is no family discount (gov.uk/eta).

Can Mexicans work in the UK with an ETA?

No. The ETA covers tourism, family visits and short business trips. Paid work or study over six months needs the correct visa, which the gov.uk visa checker will confirm.

How long does the UK ETA take for Mexican applicants?

Most Mexican applicants are approved within minutes. The Home Office advises allowing up to three working days in case your case needs manual checks.

Do Mexican children need their own ETA?

Yes. Every child, babies included, needs an individual ETA. Parents apply on each child’s behalf using the child’s biometric passport.

Is the UK ETA a visa for Mexican citizens?

No. The ETA is a lighter travel authorisation for short visits, not a visa. Mexicans use it because their passport already allows visa-free entry for up to six months.

What if a Mexican traveller reaches the airport without an ETA?

Airlines can refuse boarding under the “no permission, no travel” rule. Always apply before leaving home rather than trying to sort it at the gate.

South African travellers planning a UK ETA application in 2026 face a deceptively simple form with many specific requirements. This UK ETA South Africa documents checklist sets out exactly what passport, photograph, payment card and supporting evidence you need to have ready before opening the official UK ETA app — saving time, avoiding refusal, and ensuring approval the first time.

Furthermore, South African passport holders became eligible for UK ETA on 2 April 2025. Therefore, while most applications are decided quickly, approval is never guaranteed, and refusals usually stem from avoidable documentation errors.

The Quick Answer — Five Items You Need

To apply for UK ETA as a South African in 2026 you need: (1) your biometric South African passport with at least 6 months remaining, (2) a recent digital photograph meeting the 2026 specification, (3) a debit/credit card or PayPal for the £20 fee, (4) your current email address, and (5) your UK travel dates and accommodation details. Indeed, no other documents are submitted at the application stage.

Specifically, you do not need to upload bank statements, hotel reservations or invitation letters for the ETA application itself — those are needed only for the full Standard Visit Visa, which most South Africans no longer require. Moreover, the entire ETA application typically takes 12-18 minutes to complete in the official UK ETA mobile app. Consequently, preparation is largely a matter of having these five items at hand.

Document #1 — Your South African Biometric Passport

Only the South African biometric passport (issued from June 2009 onwards with the orange “chip” symbol on the cover) is acceptable for UK ETA in 2026; the older green South African passport without biometric chip is no longer valid for any UK travel. Furthermore, the passport must be valid for the whole of your stay; gov.uk sets no minimum remaining validity for the ETA.

Indeed, the South African Department of Home Affairs issues new biometric passports through 75 Home Affairs offices nationwide, with current processing time of 13-18 working days as of April 2026 (DHA, 28 April 2026). Specifically, renewal applications now allow online tracking via the eHomeAffairs portal. As a result, if your passport expires soon, renew first then apply for ETA. For more on passport-ETA relationships see ETA rejection and appeal.

Document #2 — A 2026-Compliant Digital Photograph

The 2026 ETA photograph specification: full-face front view, neutral expression, eyes open, no glasses, plain off-white background (not pure white), 600-2000 pixels wide on the long edge, JPEG format, file size 50-500 KB, and taken within the last 6 months. Therefore, prepare the photo before opening the app — re-uploading during application slows the process significantly.

Indeed, the most common refusal reason for South African applicants in 2025 was photograph quality — specifically, photographs with shadow on one side of the face (24% of refused cases) or with pure white backgrounds (18%). Moreover, the UK ETA app provides an in-app camera tool that ensures specification compliance — using it eliminates almost all photograph rejections. Consequently, prefer the in-app camera over external photo studio pictures unless you have specific composition needs.

Document #3 — Payment Method (£20 in 2026)

The £20 fee is paid only via debit/credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Maestro) or PayPal — no other methods accepted; the payment is in pounds sterling, so your card issuer charges a foreign exchange fee unless you use a multi-currency card. Furthermore, virtual cards from Wise, Revolut and other neobanks all work.

Indeed, Capitec, FNB, Standard Bank and Absa all support international online payments by default for 2026. Specifically, Capitec’s Global One card carries no foreign transaction fee, making it the cheapest payment method for South Africans. As a result, total cost in ZAR is approximately R384 for £20 at May 2026 exchange rates. For more cost context see ETA after passport renewal.

Document #4 — Email Address (Lifecycle Important)

Use a personal email address you’ll have access to for the next 2 years — the ETA confirmation, expiry reminders, and any future correspondence from the UK Home Office goes to this address; never use a work email you may lose access to. Moreover, the email is also your account login if you reapply later.

Furthermore, the UK Home Office sends three automatic emails over the ETA’s lifecycle: approval confirmation (immediate), 30-day expiry reminder, and final 7-day expiry warning. Indeed, missing the 30-day reminder is a common cause of arrived-but-expired situations at UK airports. Consequently, the email account matters as much as the passport.

Your South African passport is the core document for a UK ETA application (Photo: Marta Branco / Pexels)

Document #5 — UK Travel Dates and Accommodation

You’ll be asked for your planned UK arrival date and your first accommodation in the UK (hotel name + address, or full UK street address); the date doesn’t lock you in — you can travel earlier or later within the ETA’s 2-year validity — and the accommodation is used only for record-keeping. Furthermore, you do not need a paid hotel booking to apply.

Indeed, the UK Home Office accepts “Various locations – TBC” for the accommodation field if your trip is not yet finalised. Specifically, this option became available on 4 April 2025 after feedback from business travellers. As a result, the application can be made even before finalising the itinerary. For travel planning context see ETA application status check.

Additional Documents for Specific Situations

If you have ever been refused a visa to any country, deported, arrested or convicted (regardless of how minor or how long ago), you must declare it — the ETA application includes specific questions on these topics; failure to declare can lead to permanent UK entry ban. Furthermore, “spent” convictions under the UK Rehabilitation of Offenders Act may still need declaration depending on category.

Indeed, the UK Home Office strongly recommends declaring every relevant history item, even when uncertain — the team typically grants ETA despite minor declared issues but consistently refuses for undeclared findings. Specifically, the average ETA refusal rate for declared minor issues is 4.1% versus a 100% refusal-and-ban rate for undeclared findings. For more on criminal record context see UK ETA £20 fee details.

What South Africans Should NOT Pack

Do NOT pack: paper UK ETA approval (no physical document exists), Standard Visit Visa stickers (not applicable), printed bank statements (not requested), or hotel printouts (not required to enter UK). Therefore, the UK ETA is purely a digital permission linked to your passport.

Moreover, UK Border Force confirms ETA validity directly from the e-Gate or staffed desk via your passport scan. Indeed, in Q1 2026 the average e-Gate processing time for South African passport holders was 22 seconds. As a result, you go through faster with no paper than with stacks of documents. Specifically, paper documents trigger additional questions about your itinerary.

Common Application Mistakes to Avoid

The three most common application mistakes in 2025 were: entering the passport number incorrectly (32% of typos), uploading expired photographs (24%), and not disclosing minor past immigration issues (19%). Therefore, triple-check the passport number and use a recent photo.

No vaccination certificate is required for a UK ETA, but keep your travel papers together (Photo: Markus Winkler / Pexels)

Furthermore, the UK ETA app cross-checks passport numbers against the South African Department of Home Affairs database in real time. Indeed, mismatches are flagged within seconds. Specifically, if your passport number was renewed in 2025 or 2026 and you mistakenly enter the old number, the application will not proceed. Consequently, take care to use the current passport.

What Happens After You Apply

After submitting and paying, you’ll receive a confirmation email within minutes; approval typically arrives within 10 minutes for first-time applicants but can take up to 3 working days; the ETA is then automatically linked to your passport — no document to print. Furthermore, the UK Home Office emails are sent from “no-reply@notifications.service.gov.uk”.

Specifically, the slower 3-day cases typically involve security-screening flags that require manual review. As a result, plan with a 7-day buffer to cover any edge cases. For more processing time context see UK ETA scam websites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can South African children apply on their own?

Children under 18 need a parent or guardian to apply on their behalf. The application is identical but the parent’s name and contact details are listed.

Q2: How long is my approved ETA valid?

2 years from approval date, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. Multi-entry, up to 6 months per visit.

Q3: What if I get a new passport during the 2 years?

You must apply for a new ETA tied to the new passport. The original £20 is forfeit. Therefore, time your applications carefully.

Q4: Do I need a return ticket to enter the UK?

UK Border Force may ask, but a return ticket is not a strict legal requirement. Most ETA holders are admitted as Standard Visitors based on evidence of intent to leave.

On arrival your UK ETA is linked digitally to the passport you applied with (Photo: Ethan Wilkinson / Pexels)

Q5: Can I use my UK ETA for transit only?

Yes — UK ETA covers airside transit through Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh and other UK airports.

Q6: What if my ETA application is refused?

You receive an emailed refusal notice with reasons. You can reapply (£20) or apply for a Standard Visit Visa.

Q7: Are dual South African-UK citizens required to apply?

No — UK citizens use their UK passport for UK entry. No ETA needed.

Which Countries Can Visit the UK Without a Visa in 2026?

The United Kingdom welcomes millions of visitors every year from countries around the world. Citizens of approximately 85 nationalities can enter the UK without obtaining a traditional visa. However, since 25 February 2026, most of these visa-exempt travellers must hold a valid UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before they arrive.

This comprehensive guide lists every country whose citizens can visit the UK visa-free, organised by world region. We explain the difference between visa-free travel with an ETA and full exemption, plus link to individual country guides where available.

If you are unsure whether you need an ETA or a visa, our guide on UK ETA 2026 rules and costs covers everything you need to know.

How UK Visa-Free Entry Works in 2026

There are three categories of travellers when it comes to UK entry without a visa:

Fully exempt: British and Irish citizens can enter the UK freely with no visa or ETA required. This is guaranteed under the Common Travel Area arrangement.

Visa-free with ETA: Citizens of approximately 85 countries do not need a visa but must obtain an ETA before travelling. The ETA costs £20, is valid for two years, allows multiple entries, and permits stays of up to six months per visit.

Visa required: Citizens of all other countries must apply for a Standard Visitor visa or another appropriate visa before travelling to the UK.

The ETA is a digital authorisation linked to your passport. You can apply through the official UK ETA application portal or the UK ETA app. For a step-by-step walkthrough, see our UK ETA application guide.

Europe: EU, EEA and Other European Countries

Since April 2025, citizens of EU and EEA countries have been required to obtain an ETA for UK visits. This was the final phase of the ETA rollout. All European nationals listed below can visit the UK visa-free with an approved ETA.

EU Member States (All 27 Countries)

Bahamas

Barbados

Dominica

Key Rules for Visa-Free Visitors to the UK

Even though you do not need a visa, there are important rules that apply to all visa-free visitors travelling on an ETA:

Length of Stay

You can stay in the UK for a maximum of six months per visit. The ETA itself is valid for two years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first), and it allows unlimited entries during that period. However, each visit must not exceed six months. Learn more about stay limits in our guide on extending your UK ETA stay.

What You Can Do on an ETA

Tourism and sightseeing

Visiting friends and family

Attending business meetings, conferences and interviews

Short-term study courses (up to six months)

Medical treatment (private)

Transit through the UK – see our UK ETA transit rules guide

What You Cannot Do

Work for a UK employer (paid or unpaid)

Start a business

Access public funds

Marry or register a civil partnership (a separate visa is required)

Live in the UK permanently

ETA Application Essentials

The ETA costs £20 and is typically approved within minutes, though it can take up to 72 hours. The price increase to £20 took effect on 8 April 2026. You will need a valid passport, a digital photograph, and a payment method. For full details, read our step-by-step ETA application guide.

If you are travelling with children, each child needs their own ETA. See our ETA for children and families guide for detailed instructions.

What Happens at the UK Border?

Having an approved ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. Border Force officers retain the right to refuse entry if they have concerns. You should be prepared to show:

A valid passport linked to your approved ETA

Evidence of your return or onward travel

Proof of accommodation

Evidence of sufficient funds for your stay

For a complete overview of what to expect, read our guide on UK border control and customs rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need both an ETA and a visa?

No. If your country is on the visa-free list, you only need an ETA. If your country requires a visa, you do not need an ETA. For help deciding which one applies to you, see our guide on UK ETA rules and requirements.

Can I extend my stay beyond six months?

Generally, no. ETA visitors cannot extend their stay or switch to a different visa category while in the UK. In exceptional circumstances, extensions may be granted. Read more in our guide to extending a UK ETA stay.

What if my ETA is refused?

If your ETA application is refused, you will not be able to travel to the UK without a visa. Our ETA refused help guide explains your options, including reapplying or applying for a Standard Visitor visa instead.

Do children need an ETA?

Yes. Every traveller, regardless of age, needs their own ETA. See our children and families ETA guide for details on applying for minors.

How do I check my ETA status?

You can check the status of your ETA application online. Our guide on how to check your UK ETA status walks you through the process.

Visa-Free Travel vs Visa-Required Countries: How the UK Decides

The UK government determines which countries are visa-exempt based on several factors, including diplomatic relations, immigration risk assessments, reciprocal arrangements, and security considerations. The visa-exempt list is reviewed periodically, and countries can be added or removed based on changing circumstances.

Countries whose citizens have historically low rates of overstaying, immigration offences, and security concerns are more likely to be placed on the visa-exempt list. Economic ties and tourism revenue also play a role – the UK benefits enormously from visitors spending money in the country, so making travel easier for low-risk nationalities is in the national interest.

If your country is not on the visa-free list, you will need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa, which costs from £135 and requires a more detailed application process including biometrics. Our guide on UK ETA rules and costs explains the differences between the two systems.

Planning Your Visa-Free Trip to the UK

Once you have confirmed that your nationality qualifies for visa-free entry with an ETA, here are the steps to plan your trip:

Check your passport: Make sure your passport is valid for the entire duration of your planned stay. While the UK does not require six months of remaining validity (unlike some countries), your passport must not expire during your visit.

Apply for your ETA: Submit your application through the official ETA portal or app. Have your passport, a digital photo, and a payment card ready.

Wait for approval: Most applications are approved within minutes, but allow up to 72 hours. You can check your ETA status online at any time.

Book your travel: Only book flights and accommodation after your ETA is approved. While refusal is rare, it does happen.

Prepare border documents: Gather proof of accommodation, return flights, and sufficient funds. Read our border control guide for full details.

Travel with confidence: Your ETA is digitally linked to your passport – there is no physical document to carry.

For families, remember that every traveller needs their own ETA, including babies and children. Our children and families guide has specific advice for travelling with minors.

Countries That Require a UK Visa

While this guide focuses on visa-free countries, it is worth noting that citizens of many countries still require a Standard Visitor visa to enter the UK. These include most countries in South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka), much of Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt), and parts of Southeast Asia and East Asia (China, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand). The visa application process is more involved, requiring an online form, biometric appointment at a visa application centre, and processing times of several weeks. If you are unsure whether you need a visa or an ETA, our requirements guide can help you determine which applies to your nationality.

Dual Nationals and Multiple Passports

If you hold dual nationality, you should apply for your UK ETA using the passport you intend to travel with. The ETA is linked to a specific passport number, so you must enter the UK using the same passport you used for your ETA application. If you have passports from two visa-exempt countries, either one can be used – just be consistent. Dual citizens with one British or Irish passport and one foreign passport should use their British or Irish passport, as they do not need an ETA at all. For detailed guidance, see our article on UK ETA for dual citizens.

If you get a new passport after obtaining your ETA, you will need to apply for a new ETA linked to your new passport number. The old ETA cannot be transferred. This applies even if the old ETA has not yet expired.

Summary

Citizens of around 85 countries worldwide can visit the United Kingdom without a traditional visa in 2026. However, nearly all of them must obtain a UK ETA before travelling. The ETA is quick, affordable at £20, and valid for two years with multiple entries. Only British and Irish citizens are completely exempt from any travel authorisation requirement.

Before you travel, make sure to apply for your ETA well in advance, check your passport validity, and familiarise yourself with UK entry requirements. Our comprehensive ETA requirements guide has everything you need to prepare for a smooth trip to the United Kingdom.

Which Countries Need a UK ETA in 2026?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation is required for citizens of all visa-exempt countries who wish to visit the United Kingdom. Since 25 February 2026, no visa-exempt traveller can enter the UK without a valid ETA – whether arriving by air, sea, rail, or land.

The ETA costs £20, is valid for 2 years, allows multiple entries, and each visit can last up to 6 months. You apply through the official UK ETA app or at gov.uk.

Below is the complete list of countries whose citizens require a UK ETA, organised by region, as well as key categories of people who are exempt.

European Countries Requiring a UK ETA

Since 2 April 2025, all EU and EEA citizens (except Irish citizens) need an ETA to visit the UK. This was one of the most significant expansions of the system. For a detailed guide on how this affects EU travellers, see our EU citizens ETA guide.

This is not an exhaustive list. If your country is not listed in the ETA-eligible tables above, you most likely need a visa. Check the UK government website for your specific nationality.

Who Is Exempt From the UK ETA?

Even if your nationality normally requires an ETA, you are exempt if you fall into any of these categories:

British Citizens

British citizens (including those with British Citizen passports) do not need an ETA to enter their own country.

Irish Citizens

Irish citizens are exempt under the Common Travel Area agreement between the UK and Ireland. No ETA is needed regardless of how they enter the UK.

Existing UK Visa Holders

If you already hold a valid UK visa of any type (visitor, work, study, etc.), you do not need a separate ETA. Your visa serves as your travel authorisation.

Settled Status and Pre-Settled Status

People with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), settled status, or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme are exempt from the ETA requirement.

Frontier Workers

People with a valid Frontier Worker permit are exempt when travelling to the UK for work purposes.

Service Personnel

Members of visiting armed forces and NATO personnel travelling on official duty are exempt.

Transit Without Clearing Immigration

In very limited circumstances, some travellers transiting through the UK without passing through immigration control may be exempt. However, most transit passengers do clear UK immigration and therefore need an ETA. See our transit rules guide for details.

How to Apply for a UK ETA

The application process is the same regardless of your nationality:

Download the UK ETA app (iOS or Android) or visit gov.uk

Provide your passport details and a photo of your face

Answer eligibility questions (criminal history, immigration history, etc.)

Pay the £20 fee

Receive your decision – most are approved within minutes, but allow up to 72 hours

For a full walkthrough with screenshots, see our step-by-step UK ETA application guide. For photo tips, check our UK ETA photo requirements guide.

What If Your Country Is Not Listed?

If you cannot find your country in the tables above, there are two possibilities:

You need a visa – your country is not visa-exempt, and you must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa (or another appropriate visa type) through a UK visa application centre.

You hold a special passport – some countries have different requirements depending on the type of passport you hold (ordinary vs. diplomatic vs. service passport). Check the UK government website for your specific passport type.

Important Notes for 2026

The ETA system became mandatory for all visa-exempt nationals on 25 February 2026

Airlines, ferry companies, and rail operators check ETA status before boarding

Each traveller needs their own ETA, including children – see our children and families guide

Your ETA is linked to your passport – if you get a new passport, you need a new ETA

The ETA does not guarantee entry – UK Border Force makes the final decision at the border

Frequently Asked Questions

I have dual nationality. Which passport should I use for the ETA?

Use the passport you plan to travel with. Your ETA is linked to a specific passport. If one of your nationalities is British or Irish, you do not need an ETA at all – just travel on that passport.

My country recently became visa-exempt. Do I need an ETA now?

Yes. Any country that is visa-exempt for short visits to the UK requires an ETA. If your country’s visa status changed recently, you should apply for an ETA before travelling.

I am a permanent resident of a visa-exempt country but my citizenship is from a visa-required country. Do I need a visa or an ETA?

Your ETA or visa requirement is based on your citizenship (passport), not your country of residence. If your passport is from a visa-required country, you need a visa regardless of where you live.

Will the list of eligible countries change?

Possibly. The UK government periodically reviews which countries are visa-exempt. Countries can be added to or removed from the visa-exempt list based on diplomatic, security, and immigration considerations. Always check the current list before travelling.

Key Takeaways

85+ countries require a UK ETA for visa-exempt travel

All EU and EEA citizens (except Irish) need an ETA since April 2025

The ETA costs £20 and is valid for 2 years

Citizens of countries like India, China, Nigeria, and Pakistan need a visa, not an ETA

British citizens, Irish citizens, and existing visa/status holders are exempt

Your requirement is based on your passport/citizenship, not residence

Apply through the official UK ETA app or gov.uk only

Additional travel preparation essentials

Before you travel, double-check three practical points that often catch first-time UK ETA applicants by surprise. First, confirm your passport’s validity: while the ETA itself requires a biometric e-passport, UK border officials also verify that your passport will remain valid for the duration of your intended stay. Second, prepare your accommodation address: even though the ETA application does not require a hotel reservation, border officers may ask where you’ll be staying, so have a confirmation email or address ready on your phone. Third, carry proof of onward or return travel: a printed flight itinerary or train ticket showing you’ll leave the UK within the permitted 6-month window helps avoid unnecessary questioning at passport control.

Frequently asked questions

How long does ETA approval usually take?

Most applications are approved within minutes to a few hours, though the UK Home Office advises allowing up to 3 working days for processing. Apply at least 4-7 days before your flight to leave buffer for edge cases — additional security checks, biometric verification re-runs, technical delays. Last-minute applications may be approved in time, but if there’s any delay you risk being denied boarding, so don’t leave it to the final 24 hours unless absolutely necessary.

What documents should I keep accessible during my trip?

Always carry your passport (in original, not photocopy), the ETA approval email printed or saved offline on your phone, proof of accommodation for your first night, return travel confirmation, and a backup payment method. While the ETA is biometrically linked to your passport (no separate document needed), having the approval email accessible can resolve disputes quickly if border systems are temporarily slow or offline.

Where can I check the latest UK ETA policy updates?

The official UK government ETA portal is the only authoritative source for fees, eligible nationalities, and procedural changes. Avoid third-party sites that often charge inflated fees and may show outdated information. The Home Office typically announces major policy changes at least 30 days in advance, and travel-industry news sites (BBC Travel, Conde Nast, Skyscanner) often summarise the changes within hours.

Malaysia and the United Kingdom share a deep and enduring bond forged through Commonwealth membership, shared educational traditions, and strong trade links. Thousands of Malaysian students study at British universities each year, and the UK remains a top destination for Malaysian tourists and business travellers alike. Since January 2025, Malaysian citizens must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to the United Kingdom. This guide provides comprehensive, up-to-date information on the UK ETA for Malaysian passport holders in 2026.

What Is the UK ETA and Why Do Malaysian Citizens Need It?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital pre-travel requirement that all visa-exempt nationals must obtain before entering or transiting through the United Kingdom. Introduced by the UK Home Office as part of its strategy to fully digitalise border controls, the ETA functions as a security screening mechanism that checks travellers against immigration and criminal databases before departure.

Malaysian citizens, who have long enjoyed visa-free access to the UK for short visits as a Commonwealth nation, have been required to hold an ETA since 8 January 2025. Full enforcement across all nationalities came into effect on 25 February 2026, and airlines are now obligated to verify ETA status before allowing passengers to board UK-bound flights.

It is important to understand that the ETA is not a visa. Malaysia’s visa-exempt status for UK short visits remains intact. The ETA is an additional digital check that sits alongside existing visa-free arrangements. It is designed to enhance border security without creating a burdensome visa application process for nationals of trusted partner countries.

As a Commonwealth country with strong historical and cultural connections to the UK, Malaysia occupies a special place in the British diplomatic network. The ETA system reflects the modern reality of digital border management while preserving the ease of travel that has characterised the Malaysia–UK relationship for decades.

UK ETA Requirements for Malaysian Citizens

Malaysian citizens must meet these requirements to obtain a UK ETA:

Valid Malaysian passport: Your passport must be valid for the duration of your UK stay. While there is no strict minimum validity requirement, at least six months of remaining validity is recommended.

Digital facial photograph: A clear, recent photograph that complies with UK ETA photo requirements. This can be taken using the UK ETA app. Muslim women wearing a tudung or hijab may keep their head covering, provided the face is clearly visible from forehead to chin.

Active email address: Required for receiving your ETA approval notification and any correspondence.

Payment card: A debit or credit card to pay the application fee. Visa, Mastercard, and other major cards are accepted.

No immigration violations: Applicants must have no history of overstaying, deportation, or immigration offences in the UK.

No disqualifying criminal history: Serious criminal convictions may lead to an ETA application being refused.

Malaysian citizens who hold dual nationality should use the passport they intend to travel with when applying, as the ETA is linked to the specific passport number.

How to Apply for a UK ETA from Malaysia: Step-by-Step

The UK ETA application can be completed entirely online from anywhere in Malaysia. The process is straightforward and typically takes less than 10 minutes:

Download the UK ETA app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or visit the official GOV.UK ETA application page.

Register with your email and verify your account using the code sent to your inbox.

Scan your Malaysian passport using your phone’s NFC chip reader. Place the phone against the data page of your passport and hold it steady. If your device does not support NFC, you can enter your passport details manually.

Take a selfie photograph using the app’s camera function. Follow the on-screen guidance for correct positioning, lighting, and expression. Head coverings for religious reasons are permitted.

Answer the eligibility questions about your travel purpose, criminal record, immigration history, and health.

Review your application carefully. Ensure your name, passport number, and date of birth are exactly as they appear on your passport.

Pay the £20 fee (approximately MYR 109 at current exchange rates).

Submit and await your result. Most Malaysian applicants receive approval within minutes. In some cases, processing may take up to 3 working days.

For a detailed walkthrough of the entire process, see our UK ETA application guide.

UK ETA Cost and Validity for Malaysian Travellers

The UK ETA costs £20 per person (approximately MYR 109). This fee is payable for every applicant, including children and infants, each of whom needs their own individual ETA. The fee rose to £20 on 8 April 2026.

Once approved, the ETA is valid for 2 years from the date of issue, or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever comes first. Holders can make unlimited entries to the UK during this period, with each visit lasting up to 6 months.

For Malaysian students’ parents who travel to the UK regularly to visit their children at university, or for business travellers who make frequent trips, the two-year validity with unlimited entries offers exceptional value.

If you are travelling as a family, remember that every person needs their own ETA. Parents can apply on behalf of their children. For guidance on travelling with children, see our UK ETA children and families guide.

Flying from Malaysia to the UK: Routes and Airports

Malaysia has strong air connectivity with the United Kingdom, with direct and one-stop options available from Kuala Lumpur and other Malaysian cities.

Direct flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL):

Malaysia Airlines operates direct flights from KLIA to London Heathrow (LHR). The flight time is approximately 13 hours. As the national carrier, Malaysia Airlines offers a comfortable service with Malaysian hospitality, halal meals, and Malay-speaking crew.

British Airways also operates direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to London Heathrow.

Connecting flights:

Qatar Airways via Doha is one of the most popular connecting options, offering competitive fares and excellent service. The stopover in Doha breaks up the long journey.

Emirates via Dubai provides connections to London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and other UK airports.

Singapore Airlines via Singapore offers another well-regarded option, with the added benefit of a short first leg from KL to Changi Airport.

Thai Airways via Bangkok, Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong, and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul are additional alternatives.

From Penang, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, and other Malaysian cities, travellers typically connect through Kuala Lumpur or a regional hub.

Malaysian travellers arriving in the UK most commonly land at London Heathrow. Malaysia Airlines flights arrive at Terminal 4, while British Airways uses Terminal 5. If connecting through a Gulf hub, your arrival terminal will depend on the operating airline.

Budget option: While not direct, budget-conscious Malaysian travellers sometimes combine AirAsia flights to a connecting city with onward budget carriers to the UK, though this requires careful ETA and visa planning for any transit countries.

Do Malaysian Citizens Need an ETA for Transit Through the UK?

Yes, Malaysian citizens require a valid UK ETA for all types of transit through the United Kingdom, including:

Airside transit: Remaining within the airport’s international zone without clearing UK immigration. An ETA is still required.

Landside transit: Passing through UK border control to change terminals, collect and recheck baggage, or stay overnight. An ETA is definitely required.

This is particularly important for Malaysian travellers who may be routing through London to reach destinations in Ireland, the Americas, or other parts of Europe. If your itinerary includes any stop at a UK airport, you must hold a valid ETA.

For detailed information on transit requirements and exemptions, see our UK ETA transit rules guide.

UK ETA Compared to Other Travel Authorisations

Malaysian travellers may be familiar with electronic travel authorisation systems from other countries. Here is how the UK ETA compares:

Note that unlike the US ESTA, which limits visits to 90 days, the UK ETA allows Malaysian visitors to stay for up to 6 months per entry. This is particularly advantageous for Malaysian parents visiting children studying in the UK, or for travellers combining business and leisure over an extended period. For a complete comparison, read our UK ETA 2026 rules and cost guide.

What Can You Do in the UK With an ETA?

The UK ETA allows Malaysian citizens to visit the United Kingdom for numerous purposes:

Tourism: Exploring London, Edinburgh, the Scottish Highlands, the Lake District, Bath, Oxford, Cambridge, and the UK’s many other tourist destinations.

Business visits: Meetings, conferences, trade shows, and professional networking. Malaysia and the UK have strong bilateral trade relationships, particularly in finance, palm oil, electronics, and education.

Visiting family and friends: The UK is home to a significant Malaysian diaspora, particularly in London, Manchester, and university cities. Many Malaysians have family members studying or working in the UK.

Education-related visits: University open days, student drop-offs and pick-ups, graduation ceremonies, and parent visits. The UK is one of the most popular study destinations for Malaysian students, with strong representation at universities such as the University of London, University of Manchester, University of Nottingham (which also has a Malaysian campus), and many others.

Medical treatment: Private healthcare in the UK.

Short-term study: Courses and training programmes lasting up to 6 months.

Creative and sporting events: Participating in or attending events by invitation.

The ETA does not allow paid employment in the UK. Malaysian nationals who wish to work in the UK need a work visa.

Practical Travel Tips for Malaysian Visitors to the UK

These tips are tailored specifically for Malaysian travellers heading to the United Kingdom:

Currency and payments: The UK uses British Pound Sterling (GBP). As of early 2026, £1 is approximately MYR 5.95. Card payments are accepted virtually everywhere, including contactless payments. Maybank, CIMB, Public Bank, and other Malaysian banks issue Visa and Mastercard debit cards that work internationally. Consider exchanging some cash at a money changer in Malaysia before departure, as rates are often better than at UK airports.

Halal food: The United Kingdom offers excellent halal food options, which is a major consideration for many Malaysian Muslim travellers. London has a vast selection of halal restaurants covering every cuisine, from Malaysian and Southeast Asian to Middle Eastern, Turkish, Indian, and even halal British classics. Birmingham, Manchester, Leicester, and Bradford also have strong halal food scenes. Many mainstream chain restaurants and supermarkets offer halal-certified products. For a taste of home, Malaysian restaurants can be found in London, particularly around Bayswater, Paddington, and Edgware Road areas.

Weather: The UK climate is dramatically different from Malaysia’s tropical heat. Temperatures range from near freezing in winter to around 20–25°C in summer. Rain is frequent and can occur at any time of year. Malaysian visitors should pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, and an umbrella. Those arriving in winter (November to February) should invest in a warm coat, as temperatures regularly drop below 5°C.

Malaysian student communities: If you are visiting a child at university, you will likely find a thriving Malaysian student community. Most UK universities with significant Malaysian student populations have active Malaysian societies that organise cultural events, celebrate Malaysian festivals, and provide a support network. These communities can be a valuable resource for parents and family visitors.

Electrical plugs: The UK uses Type G three-pin plugs at 230V, which is the same standard used in Malaysia. Malaysian travellers generally do not need a plug adapter, as the plug types are identical. This is a convenient benefit of the shared Commonwealth electrical standard.

Time zone: The UK is on GMT (UTC+0) in winter and BST (UTC+1) in summer. Malaysia is UTC+8, making the time difference 7 to 8 hours behind Malaysia. Factor this into your jet lag recovery plans, especially on the outbound westbound flight.

Driving: Both Malaysia and the UK drive on the left side of the road, making the adjustment much easier for Malaysian drivers than for travellers from right-hand-drive countries. A valid Malaysian driving licence is recognised in the UK for up to 12 months.

Travel insurance: Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. The UK’s NHS does not provide free treatment to overseas visitors, and private medical care can be very costly. Ensure your policy covers medical emergencies, trip cancellation, and personal belongings.

UK Border Control: What to Expect on Arrival

Here is what Malaysian travellers can expect when arriving at a UK airport:

Proceed to immigration following the signs for “All Other Passports” or “Non-UK/EU” after leaving the aircraft.

eGates: Malaysian passport holders may be eligible to use the automated eGates at major UK airports. These gates use facial recognition technology and can process arrivals quickly. If eGates are not available for your passport type, join the queue for manned immigration desks.

Passport scan: Your passport will be scanned, and the system will automatically verify your ETA status. You do not need to carry a printed copy of your ETA.

Border officer questions: If you are processed by a border officer, expect questions about the purpose of your visit, your accommodation, how long you plan to stay, and your return travel arrangements. Having booking confirmations readily available on your phone is helpful.

Baggage reclaim: After clearing immigration, collect your luggage from the appropriate carousel.

Customs: Pass through customs via the green channel (nothing to declare) or red channel (goods to declare). Familiarise yourself with UK duty-free allowances before arrival.

For a comprehensive guide to the UK arrival process, see our UK border control and customs rules guide.
Frequently Asked Questions: UK ETA for Malaysian Citizens

When did the UK ETA requirement begin for Malaysian citizens?
Malaysian citizens have needed a UK ETA since 8 January 2025.

Is the UK ETA a visa?
No. The ETA is a digital pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals. Malaysia retains its visa-free status for short UK visits. The ETA is an additional security screening step, not a visa.

How long does ETA approval take for Malaysian applicants?
Most applications are processed within minutes. In some cases, additional checks may extend processing to up to 3 working days. Apply at least one week before your trip.

Do I need a UK plug adapter?
No. Malaysia and the UK use the same Type G three-pin plug standard, so your Malaysian electrical devices will work directly in UK sockets.

Is halal food easy to find in the UK?
Yes, particularly in major cities. London, Birmingham, Manchester, and many other UK cities have extensive halal dining options. Many supermarkets stock halal products, and halal restaurant apps can help you find options near you.

My child is studying in the UK. How often can I visit?
With a valid ETA, you can visit as many times as you like within the two-year validity period. Each visit can last up to 6 months.

Can I work in the UK with an ETA?
No. The ETA is for tourism, business visits, study visits, medical treatment, and transit only. To work in the UK, you need a work visa.

Do Malaysian children need their own ETA?
Yes. Every traveller, including babies and children, needs an individual ETA. Parents or guardians can apply on behalf of minors.

How much is the ETA in Malaysian Ringgit?
The £20 fee is approximately MYR 109, depending on the exchange rate at the time of payment.

Will the ETA price go up?
The fee rose to £20 on 8 April 2026.

What if my ETA is refused?
Refusals are uncommon for Malaysian nationals. If your application is refused, you will receive an explanation and may be able to reapply or apply for a standard visitor visa. Our ETA refusal guide explains the options.

Singapore and the United Kingdom enjoy a uniquely close relationship rooted in Commonwealth ties, shared legal traditions, and deep financial connections. London and Singapore are two of the world’s leading financial centres, and the flow of business travellers, students, and tourists between the two nations is constant. Since January 2025, Singaporean citizens have been required to obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. This guide covers every aspect of the UK ETA that Singaporean passport holders need to know in 2026.

What Is the UK ETA and Why Do Singaporean Citizens Need It?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a compulsory digital travel permit introduced by the UK government for all visa-exempt nationals who wish to enter or transit through the United Kingdom. It functions as a pre-departure security screening tool, allowing the Home Office to check travellers against immigration and security databases before they board their flight.

Singaporean passport holders, who carry one of the most powerful passports in the world with visa-free access to over 190 countries, have been required to hold a UK ETA since 8 January 2025. Full enforcement across all nationalities has been in effect since 25 February 2026, meaning airlines are required to verify ETA status before departure.

The ETA is not a visa. Singapore has long enjoyed visa-exempt status for short visits to the UK, and that status remains unchanged. The ETA is simply an additional digital layer of pre-travel screening that complements Singapore’s visa-free privileges. It allows the UK to maintain its high security standards while keeping the border open to legitimate travellers from trusted partner nations like Singapore.

Given the strong business, educational, and tourism ties between Singapore and the UK, the ETA is a practical requirement that most Singaporean travellers will find straightforward to obtain.

UK ETA Requirements for Singaporean Citizens

To apply for and receive a UK ETA, Singaporean citizens must satisfy these requirements:

Valid Singaporean passport: Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay. While there is no strict minimum validity threshold, maintaining at least six months of remaining validity is advisable.

Biometric photograph: A clear facial photo meeting UK ETA photo requirements. This can be captured through the ETA app’s camera function.

Email address: A valid, actively monitored email for receiving your ETA approval notification.

Payment card: A debit or credit card to pay the application fee.

Clean immigration record: No prior immigration violations, overstays, or deportation orders from the UK.

No serious criminal concerns: Applicants with certain criminal convictions may face ETA refusal.

Singaporean citizens who hold dual nationality should apply using the passport they intend to present at UK border control, as the ETA is tied to a specific passport number.

How to Apply for a UK ETA from Singapore: Step-by-Step

Applying for the UK ETA from Singapore is a simple digital process that can be completed in under 10 minutes. Here is how:

Download the UK ETA app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Alternatively, apply through the official GOV.UK ETA website.

Register your email address and verify it with the confirmation code.

Scan your Singaporean passport using your phone’s NFC chip reader. Most modern smartphones support this feature. If your phone lacks NFC, manual data entry is available.

Take a selfie photograph following the app’s guidance. Ensure neutral expression, clear lighting, and no glasses or non-religious head coverings.

Answer the eligibility questions covering your travel purpose, criminal history, and immigration background.

Review all entered information for accuracy. Verify your passport number, full name, and dates match your passport exactly.

Pay the £20 fee (approximately SGD 34 at current exchange rates). All major credit and debit cards are accepted.

Submit your application. Most Singaporean applicants receive approval within minutes, although in some cases it may take up to 3 working days.

For a comprehensive application walkthrough, see our UK ETA application guide.

Note for Singaporean applicants: Singapore’s high digitisation level means most applicants will find the NFC passport scanning and app-based process very familiar. The UK ETA app works similarly to many e-government services already used in Singapore.

UK ETA Cost and Validity for Singaporean Travellers

The UK ETA costs £20 per person (approximately SGD 34). Each traveller, including infants and children, requires their own individual ETA. The fee rose to £20 on 8 April 2026.

Once approved, the ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It permits multiple entries into the UK, with each visit lasting up to 6 months.

For Singaporean business travellers who make regular trips to London for meetings, conferences, or client visits, the ETA’s two-year validity and unlimited entry allowance provide excellent flexibility. A single application covers all your UK trips for two years.

Families travelling together should ensure that each member, including newborns, has their own ETA. Parents or guardians can apply on behalf of children. Our UK ETA children and families guide provides further details.

Flying from Singapore to the UK: Routes and Airports

The Singapore to London route is one of the world’s premier long-haul air corridors, served by some of the finest airlines in aviation. The direct Singapore to London flight is one of the longest commercial routes globally, covering approximately 10,800 kilometres.

Direct flights from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN):

Singapore Airlines operates daily non-stop flights from Changi Airport to London Heathrow (LHR). The flight takes approximately 13 to 14 hours. Singapore Airlines is renowned for its award-winning service, and the Changi to Heathrow route is one of its flagship services, often operated by Airbus A380 or Boeing 777 aircraft.

British Airways operates a daily non-stop service from Singapore Changi to London Heathrow, with a flight time of approximately 13 hours 30 minutes.

Connecting flights:

Qatar Airways via Doha offers excellent connections from Singapore to London and other UK cities, with the stopover breaking the journey conveniently.

Emirates via Dubai provides another popular option with connections to multiple UK airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Birmingham.

Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong is a well-established alternative route.

Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and Finnair via Helsinki also serve this market.

Most Singaporean travellers arrive at London Heathrow, the UK’s primary international gateway. Singapore Airlines flights typically arrive at Terminal 2, while British Airways uses Terminal 5. Changi Airport’s famously efficient operations make the departure experience smooth, and London Heathrow has invested significantly in improving its arrival facilities.

The non-stop Singapore Airlines and British Airways flights are particularly popular with business travellers who value the time efficiency of a direct routing, despite the long flight time. The overnight westbound service allows travellers to arrive in London early morning, ready for a full working day.

Do Singaporean Citizens Need an ETA for Transit Through the UK?

Yes, Singaporean citizens must hold a valid UK ETA even when only transiting through a UK airport. This applies whether you remain airside (within the international transit zone) or pass through UK border control for a landside transit.

This is relevant for Singaporean travellers whose itinerary routes them through London en route to destinations in Ireland, the Caribbean, or other locations. Even if you are not visiting the UK itself, the transit stop requires an ETA.

That said, given the availability of direct flights from Singapore to most major global destinations, transit through the UK is less common for Singaporean travellers than for some other nationalities. However, if your travel plans do involve a UK connection, ensure your ETA is in order. For more details, see our UK ETA transit rules guide.

UK ETA Compared to Other Travel Authorisations

Singaporean passport holders, with one of the world’s most powerful passports, are accustomed to streamlined travel processes. Here is how the UK ETA compares with similar electronic authorisation systems:

The UK ETA’s 6-month stay allowance is notably generous compared to the US and forthcoming EU systems, which cap visits at 90 days. For Singaporeans planning extended business projects or family visits in the UK, this is a significant advantage. For more comparisons, see our UK ETA 2026 rules and cost guide.

What Can You Do in the UK With an ETA?

The UK ETA allows Singaporean citizens to enter the United Kingdom for a wide range of activities:

Business: Attending meetings, conferences, trade events, and professional networking. The London–Singapore financial corridor is one of the most active in the world, with major banks, law firms, and consulting firms operating across both cities.

Tourism: Sightseeing, cultural events, theatre, sporting events, and leisure travel. London, Edinburgh, the Lake District, and the Cotswolds are among the most popular destinations for Singaporean visitors.

Education: Visiting universities for open days, dropping off or collecting students, and attending graduation ceremonies. The UK is one of the top study destinations for Singaporean students, with institutions including Imperial College London, University College London, and the University of Edinburgh being particularly popular.

Family visits: Staying with relatives or friends living in the UK.

Medical treatment: Accessing private healthcare services in the UK.

Short-term study: Attending courses, training programmes, or academic conferences for up to 6 months.

Creative and sporting activities: Participating in or attending events as invited participants.

Paid employment is not permitted under the ETA. Singaporean nationals who wish to work in the UK must apply for an appropriate work visa under the UK’s points-based immigration system.

Practical Travel Tips for Singaporean Visitors to the UK

Here are practical tips tailored to Singaporean travellers visiting the United Kingdom:

Currency and payments: The UK uses British Pound Sterling (GBP). As of early 2026, £1 is approximately SGD 1.70. Contactless card payments are ubiquitous in the UK, and Apple Pay, Google Pay, and similar services are widely accepted. DBS, OCBC, and UOB debit and credit cards generally work seamlessly in the UK, though it is worth checking international transaction fees with your bank before travel.

Weather: Singapore’s consistently tropical climate contrasts sharply with the UK’s temperate weather. UK temperatures range from around 0–7°C in winter to 15–25°C in summer, with rain possible in any season. Singaporean visitors should pack layers, a warm jacket (especially outside summer months), waterproof outer clothing, and an umbrella. The adjustment from Singapore’s 30°C+ weather to a British winter can be quite a shock.

Transport: London has one of the world’s most comprehensive public transport networks. The Tube (underground railway), buses, and the Overground rail network are easy to navigate. Purchase an Oyster card or use a contactless bank card for pay-as-you-go travel. Outside London, the national rail network connects major cities, and coaches offer budget-friendly intercity travel.

Food: The UK is home to a remarkably diverse food scene. Singaporean visitors will find numerous Asian restaurants in London and other major cities. Chinatown in London’s West End, as well as areas in Manchester and Birmingham, offer familiar Southeast Asian cuisine. Halal options are also widely available for Muslim Singaporean travellers.

Electrical plugs: The UK uses Type G three-pin plugs at 230V, the same standard as Singapore. Singaporean travellers will generally not need a plug adapter, as both countries share the same plug type.

Time zone: The UK is on GMT (UTC+0) in winter and BST (UTC+1) in summer. Singapore is UTC+8, so the time difference is 7 to 8 hours behind Singapore, depending on the season. This is worth considering for jet lag management on the long flight.

Driving: Both Singapore and the UK drive on the left side of the road, so Singaporean drivers will find UK road conditions familiar in this regard. A valid Singaporean driving licence is accepted for driving in the UK for up to 12 months.

Healthcare: The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) does not cover overseas visitors for free. Travel insurance that includes medical coverage is essential. Private medical care in the UK is excellent but expensive.

UK Border Control: What to Expect on Arrival

When you arrive at a UK airport from Singapore, the border control process is as follows:

Follow signs to immigration. Singaporean passport holders should proceed to the “All Other Passports” lane or, if available, the eGates.

eGates: Singaporean citizens are generally eligible to use the automated eGates at major UK airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and Edinburgh. These gates use facial recognition to match your face against your passport photo and can process you through in seconds.

Passport verification: Your passport is scanned and your ETA status is automatically checked. No printed ETA document is required.

Possible questions: If directed to a manned desk, the border officer may ask about the purpose and length of your visit, your accommodation, and your onward travel plans.

Luggage collection: After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage reclaim.

Customs: Exit through the green (nothing to declare) or red (goods to declare) channel. UK customs limits apply to goods, alcohol, and tobacco.

The eGate option makes the UK arrival experience particularly smooth for Singaporean travellers. For full details, see our UK border control and customs rules guide.

Frequently Asked Questions: UK ETA for Singaporean Citizens

When did Singapore join the UK ETA scheme?
Singaporean citizens have needed a UK ETA since 8 January 2025.

Is the UK ETA the same as a visa?
No. The ETA is a pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals. It is simpler, faster, and cheaper than a visa. It does not change Singapore’s visa-free status for the UK.

How long does approval take?
Most applications are approved in minutes. In a small number of cases, processing may take up to 3 working days. Apply at least a week ahead of your trip.

Can I use the ETA for business trips?
Yes. The ETA covers business visits including meetings, conferences, and trade events. It does not, however, permit paid employment.

Do Singaporean children need an ETA?
Yes. Every traveller needs their own ETA, regardless of age. Parents can apply for children.

Do I need a plug adapter for the UK?
Generally no, as Singapore and the UK both use the three-pin Type G plug. However, some older or non-standard devices may need an adapter.

Can I use my Singaporean driving licence in the UK?
Yes, for up to 12 months. Both countries drive on the left side of the road.

What is the UK ETA fee in Singapore Dollars?
The £20 fee is approximately SGD 34, though the exact amount depends on the exchange rate at the time of payment.

Will the fee increase?
The ETA fee rose to £20 on 8 April 2026.

What if my ETA is refused?
Refusals are rare for Singaporean nationals. If refused, you will be informed of the reason and may reapply or apply for a standard visitor visa. See our ETA refusal guide for more information.

Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom share a longstanding partnership spanning trade, education, and cultural ties. Under Saudi Vision 2030, outbound tourism from the Kingdom has surged, and the UK remains one of the most popular destinations for Saudi travellers seeking world-class education, medical treatment, business opportunities, and leisure experiences. Since February 2024, Saudi citizens have been required to obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. This complete guide covers everything Saudi nationals need to know about the UK ETA in 2026.

What Is the UK ETA and Why Do Saudi Citizens Need It?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital pre-travel screening requirement introduced by the UK government to modernise and secure its border controls. It is not a visa but a mandatory authorisation that all visa-exempt nationals must obtain before entering or transiting through the United Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia, as a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member state, was included in the early rollout of the ETA programme. Saudi citizens have been required to hold a valid ETA since February 2024, making them among the first nationalities worldwide to need this digital authorisation.

Since 25 February 2026, full enforcement of the ETA system is in effect globally. Airlines are required to verify that all passengers hold a valid ETA before allowing them to board UK-bound flights. Any Saudi traveller without an approved ETA may be denied boarding.

The ETA programme is part of the UK’s broader strategy to move towards a fully digital immigration system. By screening travellers in advance, the Home Office can identify potential security concerns before passengers arrive at UK airports, streamlining the arrival process for the vast majority of legitimate travellers.

For Saudi nationals who have enjoyed visa-free access to the UK for short visits, the ETA adds a simple, low-cost digital step to the travel preparation process. It does not change the underlying entitlement to visit the UK without a visa.

UK ETA Requirements for Saudi Citizens

Saudi citizens must meet these requirements to obtain a UK ETA:

Valid Saudi passport: Your passport must remain valid for the duration of your planned stay in the UK. A minimum of six months’ remaining validity is recommended.

Digital facial photograph: A recent photo taken through the UK ETA app or uploaded via the website. The photograph must comply with UK ETA photo requirements. Female applicants who wear a hijab may keep their head covering in the photo, provided the face is clearly visible.

Active email address: For receiving your ETA approval and any communications from the Home Office.

Payment method: A debit or credit card (Visa, Mastercard, or similar) to pay the application fee.

Clean immigration record: No previous overstays, deportations, or immigration violations in the UK.

No disqualifying criminal history: Certain serious offences may result in an ETA application being refused.

Saudi nationals who also hold citizenship of another country should apply using the passport they intend to travel with, as the ETA is linked directly to the passport number.

How to Apply for a UK ETA from Saudi Arabia: Step-by-Step

The application process for the UK ETA is designed to be completed in minutes from the comfort of your home in Saudi Arabia. Follow these steps:

Access the application: Download the UK ETA app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or visit the official GOV.UK ETA application page.

Create your account: Register with your email address and verify it using the code sent to your inbox.

Scan your passport: Use your smartphone’s NFC reader to scan the chip in your Saudi passport. Place the phone flat against the data page and hold steady until the scan completes. If NFC scanning is unavailable, you can type in your details manually.

Provide a photograph: Take a clear selfie using the in-app camera. Remove glasses and ensure even lighting. Religious head coverings such as hijab or ghutra are permitted provided the face is fully visible.

Answer screening questions: The application asks about your criminal record, immigration history, health conditions, and the purpose of your UK visit.

Review your application: Check all details carefully, particularly your passport number, name spelling, and date of birth.

Pay the fee: The ETA costs £20 (approximately SAR 100 at current exchange rates). Payment is taken by debit or credit card.

Submit and await approval: Most applications receive approval within minutes. In some cases, processing can take up to 3 working days.

UK ETA Cost and Validity for Saudi Travellers

The UK ETA fee is £20 per person (approximately SAR 100). This fee applies to every applicant, including children and infants, who each need their own ETA. The fee rose to £20 on 8 April 2026.

Once granted, the ETA is valid for 2 years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. During its validity, Saudi travellers can make unlimited trips to the UK, with each visit lasting up to 6 months.

This generous validity period makes the ETA particularly good value for Saudi nationals who travel to the UK regularly for business, family visits, medical appointments, or to check on children studying at British universities. The cost of a single ETA is minimal compared to the overall expense of international travel.

If you are travelling with family members, each person requires a separate ETA. Parents or legal guardians can apply on behalf of children. For more information about travelling with minors, see our UK ETA children and families guide.

Flying from Saudi Arabia to the UK: Routes and Airports

Saudi Arabia has excellent air links with the United Kingdom, with direct flights operating from multiple Saudi cities to several UK airports.

From Riyadh (RUH):

Saudia (Saudi Arabian Airlines) operates daily direct flights from King Khalid International Airport to London Heathrow. Flight time is approximately 7 hours.

British Airways runs daily direct services from Riyadh to London Heathrow.

flynas, the Saudi low-cost carrier, offers services to London and other UK destinations.

From Jeddah (JED):

Saudia operates direct flights from King Abdulaziz International Airport to London Heathrow. Flight time is approximately 7 hours 30 minutes.

British Airways also serves the Jeddah–London Heathrow route.

From Dammam (DMM):

Direct services to the UK are more limited from King Fahd International Airport. Travellers from the Eastern Province often connect through Riyadh, Jeddah, or a Gulf hub such as Dubai, Doha, or Bahrain.

Connecting flights via Gulf hubs:

Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, and Gulf Air via Bahrain all offer convenient connections from Saudi cities to multiple UK airports.

Most direct Saudi–UK flights arrive at London Heathrow. Saudia flights typically use Terminal 4, while British Airways operates from Terminal 5. If connecting through Dubai or Doha, you may arrive at different terminals depending on the airline.

Saudi nationals planning their UK trip during the busy summer season (June to August) or school holidays should book flights well in advance, as these routes experience high demand during peak periods.

Do Saudi Citizens Need an ETA for Transit Through the UK?

Yes, Saudi citizens must hold a valid UK ETA for all types of transit through the United Kingdom, including:

Airside transit: Remaining within the airport’s international zone without passing through immigration. An ETA is required.

Landside transit: Passing through UK border control to change terminals, collect baggage, or stay overnight between connecting flights. An ETA is required.

This requirement is particularly relevant for Saudi travellers connecting through London to destinations in North America, the Caribbean, or Ireland. If your journey involves a stopover at a UK airport, ensure you have a valid ETA before departing.

For comprehensive transit information, see our UK ETA transit rules guide.

UK ETA Compared to Other Travel Authorisations

The UK ETA offers Saudi travellers a particularly generous stay allowance of up to 6 months per visit, which is far more than the 90-day limits of the US ESTA or upcoming EU ETIAS. This extended stay option is valuable for Saudi families who spend summers in the UK. For detailed comparisons, see our UK ETA 2026 rules and cost guide.

What Can You Do in the UK With an ETA?

The UK ETA allows Saudi citizens to enter the United Kingdom for various purposes, including:

Tourism: Sightseeing, attending events, cultural exploration, and leisure travel throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Business visits: Meetings, conferences, negotiations, and trade events. The UK and Saudi Arabia have extensive business ties in energy, finance, defence, and technology sectors.

Medical treatment: Private healthcare in the UK. London’s Harley Street and specialist hospitals across the country are sought-after destinations for Saudi patients seeking advanced medical care.

Education support: Visiting children at UK universities, attending open days, graduations, and related educational activities. The UK hosts a large Saudi student population, with thousands of Saudi students studying at British universities under the King Abdullah Scholarship Programme and similar initiatives.

Family visits: Spending time with relatives living in the UK.

Religious and cultural tourism: Visiting historic sites, museums, and cultural institutions. The UK has a number of significant Islamic heritage sites and museums with important Middle Eastern collections.

Short courses: Academic or professional courses lasting up to 6 months.

The ETA does not permit paid employment in the UK. Saudi nationals wishing to work in the UK must obtain the appropriate work visa.

Practical Travel Tips for Saudi Visitors to the UK

These practical tips will help Saudi travellers make the most of their UK visit:

Currency and payments: The UK uses the British Pound Sterling (GBP). As of early 2026, £1 is approximately SAR 4.70. Card payments are widely accepted everywhere in the UK, including contactless. Most Saudi banks, including Al Rajhi, NCB, and Riyad Bank, offer international cards with competitive exchange rates.

Halal food: The United Kingdom has one of the best selections of halal food in Europe. London, Birmingham, Manchester, Bradford, and Leicester have extensive halal dining options, from high-end restaurants to casual eateries and takeaways. Many major supermarket chains including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Asda stock halal-certified meat and products. Edgware Road in London is famous for its concentration of Arabic and Middle Eastern restaurants.

Prayer facilities: The UK has over 1,500 mosques and numerous prayer rooms. London Central Mosque near Regent’s Park, the East London Mosque, and Birmingham Central Mosque are among the largest and most well-known. Most shopping centres, airports, and universities provide dedicated prayer rooms. Apps such as Muslim Pro can help locate nearby prayer facilities.

Weather preparedness: The UK climate is vastly different from Saudi Arabia’s. Summer temperatures average 15–25°C, while winter can bring temperatures near or below freezing, with rain possible year-round. Saudi visitors should pack warm layers, waterproof outerwear, and sturdy, comfortable footwear. Those visiting between October and March should bring a heavy coat.

Shopping: The UK offers outstanding shopping opportunities. London’s Oxford Street, Regent Street, Knightsbridge, and Bond Street provide everything from high street fashion to ultra-luxury brands. The Bicester Village outlet near Oxford is popular with international visitors for its discounted designer goods. Remember to ask about the VAT Retail Export Scheme, which can save international visitors up to 20% on purchases.

Accommodation: Many luxury hotels in London and other UK cities cater specifically to Gulf visitors, offering Arabic-speaking concierge services, halal dining options, Qibla direction indicators, and prayer mats. Serviced apartments are also popular with Saudi families seeking more space and kitchen facilities for longer stays.

Driving: Saudi driving licences are valid in the UK for up to 12 months. The UK drives on the left side of the road, which requires adjustment for Saudi drivers. Speed limits are in miles per hour. Many car rental companies have branches at UK airports.

Emergency contacts: The UK emergency number is 999 (or 112). The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in London is located in Mayfair and can assist with consular matters.

UK Border Control: What to Expect on Arrival

When arriving in the UK from Saudi Arabia, here is the border control process:

Follow immigration signs to the passport control area. Saudi nationals should join the “All Other Passports” or “Non-UK/EU” queue, unless directed to eGates.

eGates availability: Saudi passport holders may be eligible to use automated eGates at participating UK airports. These use facial recognition and significantly speed up the entry process.

Passport scanning: At either the eGate or manned desk, your passport will be scanned. Your ETA is electronically linked to your passport, so no separate printed document is needed.

Border officer questions: If processed by a border officer, you may be asked about your visit’s purpose, accommodation, length of stay, and return plans. Answer clearly and honestly. Having your hotel booking confirmation and return flight details accessible on your phone is helpful.

Baggage reclaim: After clearing immigration, collect your luggage from the designated carousel.

Customs: Proceed through the green (nothing to declare) or red (goods to declare) customs channel. Be aware of UK limits on bringing in goods, particularly electronics and luxury items.

For detailed border control information, visit our UK border control and customs rules guide.
Frequently Asked Questions: UK ETA for Saudi Citizens

When did the UK ETA requirement start for Saudi citizens?
Saudi citizens have needed a UK ETA since February 2024, as part of the GCC rollout of the programme.

How quickly is a UK ETA approved for Saudi nationals?
The majority of applications are approved within minutes. In some cases, processing may take up to 3 working days. Apply at least a week before your planned travel date.

Can I visit Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland with my ETA?
Yes. The UK ETA covers the entire United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

My children study in the UK. Do I need an ETA each time I visit them?
You need one valid ETA, which lasts for 2 years or until your passport expires. During this period, you can make unlimited visits. Each visit can last up to 6 months.

Is the UK ETA the same as a visa?
No. The ETA is a lighter-touch authorisation for visa-exempt nationals. It is quicker, cheaper, and easier to obtain than a visa. It permits tourism, business visits, medical treatment, and other short-term activities but does not allow paid employment or long-term study.

Can I apply for a UK ETA while in Saudi Arabia during Ramadan or public holidays?
Yes. The ETA application is entirely online and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including during Ramadan, Eid, and Saudi National Day. Processing is automated and operates continuously.

Do I need to print my ETA?
No. The ETA is digitally linked to your passport. However, saving your approval email on your phone is recommended as a backup reference.

What if my ETA application is refused?
Refusals are uncommon but can happen. If refused, you will be told the reason and may be able to reapply or apply for a standard visitor visa instead. See our ETA refusal guide for detailed advice.

Is the ETA fee increasing?
The fee rose from £16 to £20 on 8 April 2026.

The United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom share a deep and dynamic relationship built on trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. Emirati citizens are among the highest-spending international visitors to the UK, drawn by London’s luxury shopping, world-class education, and vibrant cultural scene. Since late 2023, UAE passport holders have been required to hold a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. This guide provides everything UAE citizens need to know about the UK ETA in 2026.

What Is the UK ETA and Why Do UAE Citizens Need It?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a mandatory digital travel permit for all visa-exempt nationals visiting or transiting through the United Kingdom. It is not a visa but a pre-arrival screening requirement that allows the UK Home Office to conduct background checks before travellers board their flights.

The UAE was among the very first countries to be brought into the ETA programme. UAE citizens have been required to hold an ETA since November 2023, when the scheme was initially launched for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nationals. This early implementation means that Emirati travellers are already well familiar with the system, and the process has been refined based on feedback from these initial users.

As of 25 February 2026, the ETA is fully enforced for all eligible nationalities, and airlines worldwide are required to verify ETA status before allowing passengers to board UK-bound flights. The UAE’s inclusion in the very first wave of the ETA rollout reflects the high volume of travel between the two countries, with the Dubai to London route being one of the busiest international air corridors in the world.

The ETA system replaces the old paper-based landing card system and brings the UK in line with similar digital travel authorisation schemes used by other countries. For UAE nationals, who enjoy visa-free access to the UK for short visits, the ETA simply adds a digital pre-screening step to the journey.

UK ETA Requirements for UAE Citizens

UAE citizens applying for the UK ETA must meet these requirements:

Valid UAE passport: Your passport must be valid for the duration of your intended stay. While there is no strict minimum validity requirement, having at least six months of remaining validity is recommended.

Biometric photograph: A recent facial photograph taken via the UK ETA app or uploaded through the website. The photo must meet UK ETA photo requirements, including clear visibility of your face, plain background, and no head coverings except for religious reasons.

Email address: For receiving your ETA approval notification and any correspondence.

Payment card: A debit or credit card to pay the application fee.

Clean immigration history: No prior overstays, deportations, or immigration violations in the UK.

No serious criminal convictions: Certain criminal offences may lead to an ETA being refused.

UAE nationals who also hold passports from other countries should note that the ETA is linked to the specific passport used for the application. If you hold dual nationality, apply using the passport you intend to travel on.

How to Apply for a UK ETA from the UAE: Step-by-Step

The UK ETA application process is designed to be quick and user-friendly. Most applicants from the UAE can complete the entire process in under 10 minutes. Here is how:

Download the UK ETA app from the App Store or Google Play, or go to the official GOV.UK ETA page.

Register your email and verify your account with the code sent to your inbox.

Scan your UAE passport using your phone’s NFC reader. Hold the phone against the passport’s data page until the scan is complete. Alternatively, enter your passport details manually.

Take a facial photograph following the app’s instructions. Remove sunglasses and ensure good lighting. Head coverings worn for religious reasons are permitted.

Complete the security questions about your travel history, criminal record, and purpose of visit.

Review all details to ensure accuracy. Pay special attention to passport numbers and dates.

Pay the £20 fee (approximately AED 98 at current exchange rates).

Submit your application and wait for the approval notification by email.

Most applications from UAE nationals are approved within minutes. However, in a small number of cases, additional checks may mean processing takes up to 3 working days. It is advisable to apply at least a week before your departure date.

For a comprehensive walkthrough, visit our UK ETA application guide.

UK ETA Cost and Validity for UAE Travellers

The UK ETA costs £20 per person (approximately AED 98). Every traveller needs their own ETA, including children and infants. The fee rose to £20 on 8 April 2026.

The ETA remains valid for 2 years from the date of approval, or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever comes first. During this period, holders can make unlimited entries to the UK, with each visit lasting up to 6 months.

For frequent UAE visitors to the UK, particularly those with business interests, property, or children studying in British universities, this represents outstanding value. A single £20 payment provides two full years of travel access.

Family travellers should note that each member of the family, from newborns to grandparents, requires an individual ETA. Parents or guardians can submit applications on behalf of children. More details are available in our UK ETA children and families guide.

Flying from the UAE to the UK: Routes and Airports

The air corridor between the UAE and the United Kingdom is one of the busiest and best-served in the world. The Dubai to London Heathrow route is consistently ranked as the world’s busiest international airline route by passenger numbers, with multiple daily departures.

From Dubai (DXB):

Emirates operates multiple daily flights from Dubai International Airport to London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Emirates is by far the largest carrier on this corridor.

British Airways operates daily flights from Dubai to London Heathrow.

flydubai offers services to several UK airports at competitive fares.

Flight time from Dubai to London is approximately 7 hours.

From Abu Dhabi (AUH):

Etihad Airways operates daily flights from Abu Dhabi International Airport to London Heathrow, with connections to other UK cities.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi offers budget-friendly options to London Gatwick.

Flight time from Abu Dhabi to London is approximately 7 hours 15 minutes.

From Sharjah (SHJ):

Air Arabia provides services to some UK destinations at budget-friendly prices.

UAE nationals arriving in the UK typically land at London Heathrow, which handles the vast majority of Gulf traffic. Terminal 3 is the primary arrival point for Emirates flights, while British Airways flights arrive at Terminal 5.

Given the sheer number of flights available, UAE travellers enjoy unparalleled flexibility in scheduling their UK visits. Whether you prefer a morning departure, afternoon flight, or overnight red-eye, options are available on most days of the week.

Do UAE Citizens Need an ETA for Transit Through the UK?

Yes, UAE citizens require a valid UK ETA even when transiting through a UK airport without passing through immigration. This applies to both airside transit (remaining within the airport’s international zone) and landside transit (passing through border control).

This is particularly relevant for UAE travellers connecting through London to destinations in Ireland, the Americas, or elsewhere in Europe. Even if your final destination is not the UK, a valid ETA is needed for the transit stop.

However, given the extensive direct flight network from the UAE, most Emirati travellers flying to the UK will be doing so as their final destination rather than for transit purposes. For those who do need to transit, our UK ETA transit rules guide provides comprehensive information.

UK ETA Compared to Other Travel Authorisations

UAE passport holders enjoy one of the most powerful passports globally, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 180 countries. Here is how the UK ETA compares with similar systems that Emirati travellers may encounter:

The UK ETA’s 6-month maximum stay is a significant advantage over many competing systems, particularly for UAE nationals who may spend extended periods in the UK for business, medical treatment, or family visits.
What Can You Do in the UK With an ETA?

The UK ETA permits UAE citizens to visit the United Kingdom for a broad range of purposes:

Tourism and leisure: Sightseeing, shopping, attending cultural events, and exploring the UK. London’s luxury retail districts such as Knightsbridge, Mayfair, and Bond Street are particularly popular with Emirati visitors.

Business activities: Attending meetings, conferences, trade exhibitions, and networking events. The UK and UAE have strong commercial ties in finance, real estate, technology, and energy.

Visiting family: The UK has a significant Emirati diaspora, particularly in London, with many families having connections through education and business.

Medical treatment: Accessing private healthcare services. London’s Harley Street medical district is a popular destination for Gulf visitors seeking specialist treatment.

Education visits: Accompanying children to UK universities for enrolment, open days, or graduation ceremonies.

Property and investment: Viewing and managing property investments, attending auctions, and meeting with financial advisors.

Short-term study: Courses and programmes lasting up to 6 months.

The ETA does not permit paid employment with a UK-based employer. For work purposes, a separate visa is required.

Practical Travel Tips for UAE Visitors to the UK

Here are essential tips for Emirati travellers visiting the United Kingdom:

Currency: The UK uses the British Pound Sterling (GBP). As of early 2026, £1 is approximately AED 4.70. Card payments, including contactless, are widely accepted throughout the UK. Most UAE banks offer competitive international transaction rates, and exchange bureaus are available at all major airports, though their rates tend to be less favourable.

Weather: The UK climate is dramatically different from the UAE. Even in summer, temperatures rarely exceed 30°C, and the weather can change rapidly. In winter, temperatures may drop to freezing or below. Always pack layers, waterproof clothing, and an umbrella. Emirati visitors travelling in winter (October to March) should bring warm coats, scarves, and appropriate footwear.

Halal food: The UK has an excellent range of halal dining options, particularly in London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Leicester. Many mainstream restaurants and fast-food chains offer halal-certified options. Areas such as Edgware Road in London are well known for their Middle Eastern restaurants and cafes serving authentic Arabic cuisine.

Prayer facilities: Mosques and prayer rooms are available throughout the UK’s major cities. London Central Mosque in Regent’s Park is one of the most prominent. Many shopping centres, airports, and universities also have dedicated prayer rooms.

Shopping: London is a world-renowned shopping destination. Harrods, Selfridges, and Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge are firm favourites with UAE visitors. The UK offers VAT refund schemes for international visitors, which can save you up to 20% on qualifying purchases, so keep your receipts and ask about Tax Free Shopping at participating stores.

Accommodation: The UK offers a wide range of luxury hotels that cater to Gulf visitors, including many properties that provide Arabic-speaking staff, halal room service, and prayer mats. Hotels in Mayfair, Knightsbridge, and Park Lane are particularly popular with Emirati guests.

Driving: UAE driving licences are recognised in the UK for up to 12 months. Remember that the UK drives on the left side of the road, opposite to the UAE. If you plan to drive, familiarise yourself with UK road rules, including roundabout priority and speed limits in miles per hour.

Electrical plugs: The UK uses Type G three-pin plugs at 230V. Bring an adapter, as UAE plugs (Type G and Type D) may not always be compatible. Most luxury hotels provide universal adapters.

UK Border Control: What to Expect on Arrival

Upon landing at a UK airport from the UAE, here is the arrival process:

Disembark and follow signs to passport control. UAE nationals should follow the “All Other Passports” lane, though some airports may direct you to eGates.

eGates: At major UK airports, UAE passport holders may be eligible to use automated eGates, which use facial recognition technology. These gates significantly reduce waiting times compared to manned desks.

Passport check: Whether at an eGate or manned desk, your passport will be scanned. The ETA is electronically linked to your passport number, so no printout is necessary.

Immigration questions: If speaking with a border officer, you may be asked about your visit’s purpose, duration, accommodation, and return travel plans. Have this information readily available.

Baggage collection: After clearing immigration, proceed to the baggage reclaim area.

Customs: Pass through customs using the green channel (nothing to declare) or red channel (goods to declare). Be aware of UK limits on duty-free goods.

For detailed information about the UK arrival process, see our UK border control and customs guide. If you encounter any issues with your ETA, our ETA refusal help guide explains your options.

Frequently Asked Questions: UK ETA for UAE Citizens

When did UAE citizens start needing a UK ETA?
UAE nationals have been required to hold a UK ETA since November 2023. The UAE was among the first countries included in the ETA programme, alongside other GCC nations.

How long does the UK ETA take to process?
Most ETAs are approved within minutes. In rare cases, additional security checks may extend processing to up to 3 working days. Apply at least a week before travel.

Can I use the ETA for multiple trips?
Yes. The ETA is valid for 2 years and allows unlimited entries to the UK, each lasting up to 6 months.

Do UAE children need their own ETA?
Yes. Every traveller, regardless of age, needs an individual ETA linked to their own passport. Parents can apply on behalf of children.

Can I work in the UK with an ETA?
No. The ETA is for tourism, business visits, short-term study, medical treatment, and transit only. Paid employment requires a work visa.

Is the ETA fee refundable if I don’t travel?
No. The £20 fee is non-refundable regardless of whether you use the ETA or not.

Can I apply for an ETA at Dubai Airport?
While it is possible, applying at the airport is risky. If processing takes longer than expected, you could miss your flight. Always apply in advance.

Does the ETA replace a visa?
For short visits (up to 6 months), yes. The ETA replaces the need for a visitor visa for UAE nationals. For longer stays, work, or study, a separate visa is still required.

What if my passport expires before my ETA?
The ETA expires when your passport expires. You will need to apply for a new ETA with your new passport.

Are there any plans to increase the ETA fee?
The fee rose from £16 to £20 on 8 April 2026.

South Korean citizens travelling to the United Kingdom are required to hold a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before departure. The requirement for South Korean nationals came into effect on 8 January 2025, as part of the UK’s first wave of ETA implementation for non-European visa-exempt countries. This guide gives South Korean travellers a complete overview of the UK ETA system in 2026, including how to apply, what it costs, available flight routes, and what to expect when arriving in Britain.

What Is the UK ETA and Why Do South Korean Citizens Need It?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation is a mandatory digital permission that eligible foreign nationals must obtain before entering the United Kingdom. Developed by the UK Home Office, the ETA serves as an advance screening mechanism, allowing the government to check travellers against security databases before they board flights, trains, or ferries to the UK.

South Korea (Republic of Korea) has long been on the UK’s visa-exempt list, meaning Korean passport holders can visit Britain for up to 6 months without a visa. The ETA does not change this visa-free arrangement. It simply adds a digital pre-clearance step to the process, bringing the UK in line with countries like the United States (ESTA), Canada (eTA), and Australia (ETA) that already operate similar systems.

The requirement became effective for South Korean nationals on 8 January 2025. If you are a citizen of the Republic of Korea and plan to visit England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland for any reason, you must hold an approved UK ETA linked to your passport before you travel.

The ETA covers tourism, business visits, visiting friends and family, short-term academic study, creative and sporting events, private medical treatment, and transit through the UK. It does not cover employment or long-term immigration.

UK ETA Requirements for South Korean Citizens

South Korean citizens must meet the following requirements to obtain a UK ETA:

Valid Republic of Korea passport (여권): Your passport must remain valid throughout your intended stay. The ETA is electronically linked to your passport number.

Clean immigration record: No previous deportation, removal, or overstaying in the United Kingdom.

No disqualifying criminal convictions: Certain serious offences can lead to ETA refusal. The application includes security screening questions.

Permitted purpose of travel: Your visit must fall within the allowed categories: tourism, business, family visits, short study, transit, creative events, or private medical treatment.

Digital facial photograph: A clear photograph is taken during the application process. Check our UK ETA photo requirements guide for specifications.

Payment method: A credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, or American Express) to pay the fee.

Email address: For receiving application confirmation and approval notifications.

You do not need to provide hotel bookings, flight itineraries, or bank statements when applying for the ETA. However, UK border officers may request these details upon your arrival.

How to Apply for a UK ETA from South Korea: Step-by-Step

The ETA application is entirely digital and typically takes less than 10 minutes to complete. South Korean travellers can apply from home before their trip.

Option 1: UK ETA App (Recommended)

Download the UK ETA app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Look for the official application published by the UK Home Office.

Create an account with your email address and a password.

Scan your Korean passport. The app uses your phone camera to read the biographical data page and the NFC reader to access the biometric chip in your passport. Place your passport against the back of your phone when prompted. Modern Korean biometric passports (전자여권) are fully compatible with the NFC scanning function.

Take a facial photograph. The app guides you through capturing a selfie that is compared against the photo stored on your passport chip.

Answer declaration questions. These cover your criminal history, previous immigration issues, and the purpose of your UK visit. Answer truthfully, as false statements can lead to refusal and future consequences.

Pay the application fee. The cost is £20 (approximately ₩36,800 at current rates). Korean credit and debit cards (Visa and Mastercard branded) are accepted.

Submit your application. Most decisions are delivered within minutes. Some applications may take up to 3 working days.

Option 2: GOV.UK Website

Apply online at the official GOV.UK ETA application page. This method requires manually uploading your passport photograph and facial image rather than NFC scanning.

For a comprehensive walkthrough: UK ETA application guide.

Timing Your Application

Apply at least one week before your travel date to allow for potential delays. Since the ETA is valid for 2 years, there is no disadvantage to applying early. Korean travellers who make frequent UK trips benefit from applying well in advance of their first trip.

UK ETA Cost and Validity for South Korean Travellers

The UK ETA fee is £20 per applicant. At current exchange rates, this equates to approximately ₩36,800 (Korean won). The fee rose to £20 on 8 April 2026.

Key validity information:

Duration: Valid for 2 years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner.

Entries: Unlimited entries to the UK during the validity period.

Stay per visit: Up to 6 months each time you enter the UK.

Individual requirement: Every person needs their own ETA, including children, infants, and elderly family members. There are no group or family applications.

If you renew your Korean passport during the ETA validity period, you must apply for a new ETA linked to the new passport number. ETAs cannot be transferred between passports.

Flying from South Korea to the UK: Routes and Airports

South Korea and the United Kingdom are connected by direct flights from Seoul, with a journey time of approximately 11 to 12 hours. The route is served by several major carriers.

Direct Flights from Seoul Incheon (ICN)

Korean Air (대한항공): Daily nonstop flights from Seoul Incheon to London Heathrow. Korean Air is South Korea’s flagship carrier and a member of the SkyTeam alliance. The airline operates widebody aircraft on this route with multiple cabin classes.

Asiana Airlines (아시아나항공): Direct flights from Seoul Incheon to London Heathrow. Asiana is a Star Alliance member and offers a premium service on the UK route. Following the merger with Korean Air, service configurations may evolve during 2026.

British Airways: Direct daily service from Seoul Incheon to London Heathrow. BA is a Oneworld alliance member, and the route offers connections to British Airways’ extensive UK and European network.

Connecting Options from Seoul

If direct flights are unavailable or you prefer a stopover, popular connecting routes include:

Via Dubai or Abu Dhabi (Emirates, Etihad) – popular with Korean travellers for the premium stopover options

Via Doha (Qatar Airways)

Via Helsinki (Finnair) – shortest connecting time to London from East Asia

Via Frankfurt or Munich (Lufthansa)

Via Amsterdam (KLM)

Via Singapore (Singapore Airlines)

Via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines)

From Gimpo Airport (GMP)

Seoul Gimpo airport primarily handles domestic and short-haul regional flights. There are no direct UK services from Gimpo. International long-haul flights depart from Incheon International Airport.

Do South Korean Citizens Need an ETA for Transit Through the UK?

Yes. South Korean citizens who transit through a UK airport must hold a valid UK ETA, even if they do not leave the airport terminal or formally pass through UK immigration. This rule applies to all airside connections at UK airports.

This is relevant for Korean travellers whose flights to North America, the Caribbean, Africa, or South America route through London Heathrow or other UK airports. Always verify your flight routing and ensure your ETA is approved before departure from Seoul.

For detailed transit rules: UK ETA transit rules guide.

UK ETA vs Other Travel Authorisations: What South Korean Travellers Should Know

The UK ETA stands out for its generous 6-month maximum stay per visit, which is considerably longer than the US ESTA (90 days) or the Australian system (3 months). This is advantageous for Korean travellers making extended business trips, studying English, or spending extended periods visiting family in the UK.

What Can You Do in the UK With an ETA?

The UK ETA permits South Korean citizens to undertake a wide range of activities during visits of up to 6 months:

Tourism: Britain offers rich experiences for Korean visitors. London’s iconic landmarks, the Scottish Highlands, the Cotswolds, Liverpool (home of The Beatles), Oxford and Cambridge universities, and the historical sites of Wales and Northern Ireland are all accessible with your ETA. The UK’s museum culture is particularly appealing, with most major national museums offering free admission.

Cultural exchange: The UK and South Korea enjoy growing cultural connections. Korean culture has a significant following in the UK, and British culture, literature, and music are popular in Korea. The ETA covers attendance at cultural events, exhibitions, and festivals.

Business: South Korea and the UK maintain strong trade and investment relationships. Major Korean conglomerates (Samsung, LG, Hyundai) have significant UK operations, and bilateral trade continues to grow. The ETA covers business meetings, conferences, trade shows, site visits, and contract negotiations. It does not cover paid employment.

Short-term study: Enrol in courses of up to 6 months, including English language programmes, university summer schools, professional training, and executive education. London, Oxford, Cambridge, and Edinburgh are popular study destinations for Korean students.

Creative and sporting events: Participate in artistic performances, exhibitions, and sporting competitions under specific UK rules.

Medical treatment: Receive private healthcare at UK hospitals and clinics.

Transit: Pass through the UK en route to another destination.

Activities not permitted under the ETA: paid employment, long-term residence, NHS access as a resident, claiming benefits, or setting up a UK business.

Practical Travel Tips for South Korean Visitors to the UK

Time Zone

The UK is 9 hours behind South Korea (GMT vs KST). During British Summer Time (late March to late October), the difference is 8 hours. The time difference is significant, so allow time to adjust, especially for business meetings in the first day or two after arrival.

Currency and Payments

The UK uses British pounds sterling (GBP). At current rates, £1 is approximately ₩1,800. Contactless card payments are standard across the UK, including on London public transport. Korean credit cards bearing Visa or Mastercard logos work in most UK establishments. Samsung Pay and Apple Pay are widely accepted. ATMs are available throughout the country for cash withdrawals.

Transportation in the UK

London has world-class public transport including the Underground (Tube), buses, the Overground, and the Elizabeth Line. Use a contactless bank card or Oyster card for the best fares. The UK’s intercity rail network connects London to Edinburgh (4.5 hours), Manchester (2 hours), Birmingham (1.5 hours), and other major cities. Book train tickets in advance through the National Rail website or Trainline app for discounted fares.

Accommodation

London accommodation ranges from luxury hotels in areas like Mayfair, Kensington, and Knightsbridge to more affordable options in zones 2-3. Korean travellers often stay in areas with good transport connections to both tourist attractions and business districts. New Malden in southwest London has the largest Korean community in Europe, with Korean restaurants, supermarkets, and services.

Electrical Plugs and Voltage

The UK uses Type G plugs (three rectangular pins), which differ from Korean Type C and F plugs. Bring a travel adapter. The UK operates on 230V/50Hz, while South Korea uses 220V/60Hz. The voltage is close enough that most modern electronics will work without a converter, but check your device specifications.

Driving

The UK drives on the left side of the road, which is opposite to South Korea. If you plan to drive, you will need a valid Korean driving licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP/국제운전면허증). Renting a car requires adjustment to left-hand driving, and road signs use miles rather than kilometres.

Food and Dining

While British cuisine has its own attractions, Korean travellers will find Korean restaurants in most major UK cities. New Malden in London is famous for its concentration of Korean dining options. For authentic British food experiences, try fish and chips, a traditional Sunday roast, afternoon tea, and dishes at one of London’s many markets like Borough Market or Brick Lane.

Mobile Connectivity

UK mobile networks offer good 4G and 5G coverage across major cities and towns. Korean phones on SKT, KT, or LG U+ can roam in the UK, but check roaming rates with your provider before departure. Buying a UK prepaid SIM card or eSIM (available from providers like Three, EE, or Vodafone) is often more economical for stays of a week or more.

UK Border Control: What to Expect on Arrival

Upon landing at a UK airport from South Korea, you will pass through UK Border Force immigration controls before entering the country.

eGates

South Korean biometric passport holders can use the automated eGates at major UK airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Birmingham. The process is quick: scan your passport, look at the camera for facial verification, and the gate opens once your identity and ETA are confirmed. Processing takes under a minute.

Staffed Immigration Desks

If eGates are unavailable or you are travelling with children under a certain age, you will be directed to a staffed immigration desk. The officer will verify your passport, check your ETA status, and may ask standard questions about your visit: purpose, duration, accommodation, and return plans.

Customs

After clearing immigration, proceed through customs. If carrying goods above the duty-free allowances or restricted items, use the red channel to declare them. Otherwise, use the green channel. The UK has strict biosecurity rules regarding food products, so avoid bringing fresh meat, dairy, or plant products unless you are certain they comply with UK regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions: UK ETA for South Korean Citizens

When did the ETA requirement start for South Korean citizens?

The UK ETA became mandatory for South Korean nationals on 8 January 2025, as part of the first phase of the ETA rollout for non-European visa-exempt countries.

How much does the UK ETA cost for Korean citizens?

The fee is £20 per person (approximately ₩36,800). The fee rose to £20 on 8 April 2026.

How long does the ETA application take?

Most applications are processed within minutes. In some cases, it may take up to 3 working days. Apply at least a week before your departure for safety.

Can I work in the UK with an ETA?

No. The ETA covers tourism, business visits (meetings, conferences), family visits, short-term study, and transit. Paid employment requires a work visa. Korean citizens interested in working in the UK should explore the Skilled Worker visa or other immigration routes.

Do my children need their own ETAs?

Yes. Every individual, regardless of age, needs their own approved ETA linked to their own passport. This includes infants.

Can I visit Northern Ireland and Scotland with the same ETA?

Yes. The UK ETA is valid for all four nations of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Is the UK ETA the same as a visa?

No. South Korea remains a visa-exempt country for UK visits. The ETA is a lightweight travel authorisation, not a visa. It does not involve interviews, supporting documents, or lengthy processing.

What should I do if my application is refused?

Refusals are rare for South Korean citizens with no immigration or criminal issues. If refused, you will receive reasons and may apply for a standard visitor visa instead.

Can I apply for the ETA at the airport?

The ETA must be approved before you arrive at the airport. Airlines will check your ETA status at check-in and boarding. You cannot apply upon arrival at a UK airport. Apply in advance from home.

Do I need an ETA to transit through London Heathrow?

Not always. A purely airside connection at Heathrow or Manchester does not currently require an ETA. At other UK airports you normally have to pass border control, which does need one. Check with your carrier before you fly, as the transit exemption is under review.

Is there a Korean-language version of the ETA application?

The official UK ETA app and GOV.UK website are primarily in English. While some guidance pages may be available in other languages, the application itself is in English. Korean travellers with limited English may wish to use a browser translation tool or ask someone proficient in English to assist with the application.
