ETIAS is intended for visa-exempt travellers from outside the EU who visit Schengen countries. It is a separate system and has nothing to do with the UK ETA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/home-affairs.ec.europa.eu\/policies\/schengen\/smart-borders\/european-travel-information-authorisation-system_en\">European Commission, ETIAS<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group etafi-tl-item\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"etafi-tl-date wp-block-paragraph\">8 July 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">eGates from age 8<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since this date children aged 8 and 9 can also use the automatic eGates at the UK border, provided they are at least 120 cm tall and travelling with an adult. The minimum age used to be higher. This applies to both the UK ETA app and the online form on GOV.UK. Airlines and other carriers must check before departure that you have permission to travel. Without an ETA you cannot board the plane, the Eurostar or the ferry. Applications were possible from 5 March 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/uk-to-extend-electronic-travel-to-european-visitors\">Home Office, 5 March 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group etafi-tl-item\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"etafi-tl-date wp-block-paragraph\">16 January 2025<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Temporary exemption for airside transit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you change planes at a UK airport without going through border control, you do not need an ETA. The UK government called this a temporary exemption that it keeps under review; it mainly concerns Heathrow and Manchester. On 25 September 2026 the exemption was still on GOV.UK (page updated on 18 September 2026). If you do go through border control, you need an ETA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/next-steps-for-a-more-efficient-immigration-system\">Home Office, 16 January 2025<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/eta\/when-not-need-eta\">GOV.UK, When you do not need an ETA<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What applies now?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ETA costs \u00a320 per applicant, and every traveller needs their own ETA, including children and babies.<\/li>\n\n<li>The ETA is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires \u2013 whichever comes first \u2013 and covers multiple trips of up to 6 months each.<\/li>\n\n<li>You usually get a decision within a day, but it can take up to 3 working days. So apply at least 3 working days before you travel.<\/li>\n\n<li>The ETA is linked to the passport you travel with, so apply using that passport (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/uk-border-control\/before-you-leave-for-the-uk\">GOV.UK<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n<li>You apply for the ETA at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/eta\/apply\">gov.uk\/eta\/apply<\/a> or with the UK ETA app. Our <a href=\"\/en\/eta-england-2026-complete-guide-for-travellers\/\">complete guide<\/a> walks you through it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not sure whether you need an ETA?
